Disc Golf
Disc golf is a sport similar to traditional golf. Instead of balls and clubs, however, players use a flying disc — also known as a Frisbee. The sport took shape in the United States in the 1970s and, as with classic golf, the aim is to complete each hole in as few strokes as possible (or, in disc golf, as few throws as possible). The disc is thrown from the tee area towards a target: a raised metal basket. As the player works down the hole, every subsequent throw must be made from the spot where the previous one came to rest. Trees, bushes and changes in terrain on and around the holes form challenging obstacles for disc golfers. A hole ends when the disc lands in the basket. Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations as traditional golf — whether it is a long approach to the basket or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway.
There are, however, a few differences. Disc golf rarely requires a fee to play and is designed to be enjoyed by people of every age — men and women alike — regardless of their economic background.

Who can play?
Disc golf can be played from school age right through to old age, making it one of the most accessible lifelong sports. It is also open to people with mental or physical disabilities, giving them the chance to take part in a mainstream activity. Disc golf is easy to learn, so nobody is left out. Players simply set the pace that suits their ability and play on from wherever their disc lands. Disc golf tournaments in the Czech Republic are open to men and women of every skill level, from beginners to professionals.
Where is it played?
Permanent disc golf courses can be found all over the world, with more than 100 in the Czech Republic alone. Most are located in urban parks or on the edges of towns and villages. Disc golf courses can sit comfortably alongside a park's existing facilities and equipment. The ideal location combines wooded and open terrain with a range of topographical changes. Clubs often grow up around these courses, organising shared training sessions and a variety of tournaments and competitions.
Why take up disc golf?
In the pursuit of better health and quality of life, more and more people are looking for new recreational activities. Disc golf builds upper- and lower-body fitness and combines physical and mental skill, all with a very low risk of injury. Players who are less fit can start gently and progress as their fitness improves. You can play whenever you like: a single round takes one to two hours and you can play on your own or with friends. Disc golf is a year-round activity — even in rain or snow. Perhaps its greatest strength is how affordable it is: a disc costs under CZK 500, and you only need one to get started.
And on top of all that, there is the sheer fun of the game — whatever your age or skill level!
