How to Start Playing Disc Golf

Disc golf is a simple, accessible and fun sport that anyone can play. You don't need expensive equipment or special preparation — just grab a disc and you're ready to head out to a course.

On this page you'll find everything you need to know to get started with disc golf.

About discgolf

Disc golf is a sport similar to traditional golf, but instead of a ball and clubs you use a flying disc. The aim is to land the disc in a dedicated basket in as few throws as possible.

It's played on disc golf courses, which you'll find all over the Czech Republic — most are free and openly accessible.

What you need to get started

Getting started with disc golf is really simple:

  • a basic disc (ideally a putter or midrange)
  • comfortable clothes
  • the desire to give it a go

One disc is often all you need for your first game. You can build up your equipment gradually over time.

How the game is played

  • Each hole has a starting point (the tee) and a target basket.
  • The player throws the disc towards the basket.
  • Each next throw is made from wherever the disc lands.
  • The goal is to hit the basket in as few throws as possible.

The rules are simple, and you'll pick up the basics quickly.

Where to play disc golf in the Czech Republic

Basic throw types

To start out, you only need to know two basic throws:

  • backhand — the most common and easiest throw
  • forehand (sidearm) — a more advanced one

You can pick up more techniques later, but it's not necessary at the start.

How to improve

If disc golf grabs you, you can keep moving forward step by step:

  • watching videos and tutorials
  • playing regularly
  • joining up with other players
  • taking part in tournaments

The fastest progress comes through practice. If you're a complete beginner, we recommend reaching out to one of the local disc golf clubs — they'll help you with basic technique and the rules.
